Honda Type R Mugen Concept
You may have already seen or heard about the exciting Honda Civic Type R MUGEN Concept. If not, you soon will. This month, the car graces the front cover of CAR magazine (see below), in which the road test editor reports
that: "No production car I've driven, Ferrari's included, sounds as manic as this Civic... It's reignited my enthusiasm for the hot hatch breed."
Last month, Honda ran a competition with Pistonheads, the online car enthusiast community for one of its readers/forum contributors to win a trip to Japan to test the car before anyone else. Honda captured the winner's experience on video, and you can view this here and the Pistonheads review is here.
The Honda Civic Type R MUGEN Concept is an exclusive, hand-built race car for the road
"If Honda stands for great engineering, then MUGEN stands for craftsmanship," says Masashi Honma, from MUGEN in Japan.
Every nut and bolt, component and part of the UK-spec 3-door Civic Type R has been analysed and evaluated, before further development by MUGEN, the renowned tuner of Honda engines for motor racing. The result is one of the quickest and most satisfying cars to drive from point to point; a sophisticated road-going hot hatch with racing pedigree with more power, revised suspension, bigger brakes and even more aggressive looks.
This car is more like a junior league GT3 car than an extreme hot hatch. It will appeal to those drivers who love the purity of sound, and the instantaneous response of a normally-aspirated engine rather than the crude kick of a mass produced turbo car.
At the moment, the MUGEN Concept is still very much a concept car, with no plans for production. MUGEN has brought the car to the UK to gather feedback from the public and the media before deciding on the possibility of a very limited run of hand-built cars for customers.
Keep an eye on the motoring media for more features on the Type R MUGEN Concept. We have a copy of CAR magazine in the press office (3W) for those who want to read this month's review.
