“The all-new Sportage has been thoroughly conceived and developed exclusively for Europe, pushing boundaries and setting new benchmarks in the SUV segment,”- Jason Jeong, President of Kia Europe.

“We have efficient, eco-friendly hybrid models that can fulfil all of our clients' needs, and the new Sportage is equipped with innovative powertrain electrification technologies. The all-new plug-in hybrid Sportage model, with its zero-emissions all-electric range, shows Kia's ambition to accelerate sustainable transportation across Europe,” said Jeong.

European Sportage

Kia Europe has unveiled the European Sportage, which has been thoughtfully designed to set new standards in the SUV segment in Europe. It mixes a sleek yet muscular and futuristic outer appearance with a cutting-edge luxury interior that includes a swooping integrated curved display housing the most recent breakthroughs in connectivity technology.

The European Sportage, built on a new design, benefits from a European-focused high-tech engineering programme that has resulted in an optimal wheelbase as well as ideal dimensions and proportions for European roads. This thorough approach has contributed to the development of an SUV that is a perfect fit for European requirements, emphasising its everyday practicality and usability. As a result of such a progressive and personalised package, baggage space, headroom, and legroom have all been significantly expanded over the outgoing Sportage model, with best-in-class legroom for second-row occupants.

Modern hybrid powertrains further increase the European Sportage's capabilities, lowering pollution and improving fuel economy. Another first for the European Sportage is an advanced plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, which enables emissions-free electric-only driving for most everyday excursions from home to work or for daily shopping needs. The most recent internal combustion clean petrol and diesel engines are also available in a variety of economy and power configurations, guaranteeing that the Sportage can cover the whole European market.

The new Sportage introduces a number of extremely innovative technological advances to deliver a dynamic, engaging, and ideal driving experience for European roads. Because of its continuous damping control in real-time, a new-generation Electronic Controlled Suspension (ECS) provides optimum comfort and improved safety standards at all times. A new Terrain Mode gives the Sportage exceptional ride characteristics in more difficult situations such as snow, mud, and sand, allowing owners to engage in more adventurous leisure activities.

New Design

The exterior of the new Sportage establishes new design boundaries, giving it dramatic presence on European roads.Revealed earlier this year to great acclaim from the design community, Kia’s new design language – Opposites United – is at the core of the new Sportage, influencing every aspect of its appearance and character.

The thought-provoking and daring philosophy is formed of five pillars:

  • Joy for Reason
  • Power to Progress
  • Technology for Life
  • Tension for Serenity
  • Bold for Nature

The last pillar – Bold for Nature – has profoundly influenced the design creation of new Sportage, embodying the natural world and creating a design identity that takes a daring, emotional, modern but organic form.

What’s New?

Representing another first for the new Sportage range in Europe, a black roof is now available with the new model, helping to accentuate the sporting profile and highlight the architecturally dynamic C-pillar. The addition of a chrome beltline kicks up onto the rear of the new Sportage, creating harmonious lines with the rear spoiler that further adds to the sporting pedigree of the car.

The new Sportage also leads the way in safety featuring both passive and active high-tech systems – including Kia’s world-renowned comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

Interior Space

The interior of the new Sportage combines bold character, soft attributes, and technological innovation to create a driver-oriented atmosphere that is really cutting-edge. The cabin has been meticulously designed to combine cutting-edge technology with luxurious features, premium materials, and contemporary styling.

Storage, operating system configuration, cupholders, and soft-touch controls are all conveniently located on an ergonomic centre console for the driver and front passenger. Wireless charging at a high-speed of 15W is available in a smartphone charging bay.

The innovative integrated controller and high-tech 12.3-inch touchscreen serves as the nerve centre for driver and passenger connectivity, functionality, and use. Both systems were designed to be simple to use, intuitive, and pleasant to the touch. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster features a complete thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display with the latest generation of full thin-film transistors for highly precise and vivid images.

Users may also access essential onboard services like Kia Live Services, Online Navigation, Online speech recognition, and Calendar integration from their smartphones thanks to the engaging, user-friendly technology. The Kia Connect App gives consumers complete peace of mind by allowing them to check that their Sportage is locked and the windows are closed with a simple tap, as well as complete convenience by alerting them of where they parked their SUV last.

The European Sportage has 996mm of legroom in the second row and 998mm of headroom in the back. 591 litres of luggage capacity (VDA). The rear seats fold down in a 40:20:40 split for maximum convenience, providing 1,780 litres of cargo space.

An industry-leading Harman Kardon premium sound system provides fully immersive in-car surround sound to the 2017 Sportage's occupants.

Efficiency, Power, and Performance

The new Sportage will be available with a wide selection of powerful, responsive, and efficient powertrains, including cutting-edge hybrid electric technologies and the most recent-generation clean gasoline and diesel IC engines.

The hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models of the new European Sportage are built on a sophisticated architecture that incorporates powertrain electrification advances, delivering a no-compromise eco-friendly SUV package.

  • The PHEV Sportage is powered by a 1.6-liter T-GDI engine from Kia, a 66.9kW permanent magnet traction electric motor, and a 13.8kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The powertrain combination generates a total system power output of 265PS, with the internal combustion engine generating 180PS.
  • The HEV Sportage model also includes Kia's renowned 1.6 T-GDI 180PS engine. It has a 44.2kW permanent magnet traction electric motor and a lithium-ion polymer battery with a capacity of 1.49kWh. The HEV Sportage has a total system power of 230PS.

All European Sportage models include Kia's Idle Stop-and-Go technology, which switches the engine off when the vehicle is motionless, resulting in additional real-world fuel savings and emissions reduction.

The 1.6 T-GDI engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (7DCT), as well as a 6-speed manual transmission (MT). The 1.6-liter diesel models, with or without MHEV technology, can be combined with either a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT) or the 7DCT.

Safety

Kia's renowned in-house developed Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology, also known as DriveWise, assists the new Sportage in avoiding potential risks, fully protecting occupants and other road users on every journey. The 2018 Sportage includes Kia's industry-leading Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist System with Junction Turning capabilities as part of its DriveWise ADAS package, which helps avoid collisions with oncoming automobiles when turning left at intersections.

When driving on a highway, Highway Driving Assist (HDA) maintains a set distance and speed from the car ahead and assists in keeping the new Sportage centred in its lane. HDA can also alter vehicle speed in accordance with the posted speed restriction.

Using real-time navigation data, navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) assists the new Sportage in maintaining a safe speed on the highway. To broaden the reach of NSCC, for sections of the highway with bends and curves, the system automatically slows the speed of travel before approaching the corner or curve. When you return to the highway's "straight," NSCC adjusts the speed restriction to the original level.

The new European Sportage also includes Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA) technology, which alerts the driver if the vehicle exceeds the speed limit.

Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) assists the driver in parking or exiting a parking space from outside the car. The addition of Rear-View Monitor (RVM) and Surround View Monitor (SVM) technology, which displays real-time video footage of the car and its surrounds, improves parking manoeuvres even further.
