Ambulance service picks Škoda Enyaq to electrify their paramedic response fleet

Milton Keynes, 3 August 2023 - The East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) has selected the Škoda Enyaq electric vehicle to provide sustainable rapid response services across the East Midlands region, aligning with EMAS's commitment to fleet electrification and net zero emissions.

Two Škoda Enyaq 80 models have entered service following a successful trial period evaluating the vehicle's suitability for emergency response. The fully electric SUVs join the existing fleet comprised of Škoda Octavia Scout vehicles. The rapid response fleet sees high demand, with EMAS receiving a 999 call on average every 25 seconds.

The Enyaq underwent comprehensive modifications to meet the needs of first responders. The spacious interior and generous cargo capacity accommodate all the necessary equipment, supplies and medication needed by the first responders. Modifications were made to the car including optimized range, energy-efficient LED lighting, aerodynamic light bars and lightweight interior components.

Each rapid response vehicle covers approximately 40 miles daily. The Enyaq's range enables teams to complete 12-hour shifts without recharging. EMAS trialled the Enyaq in late 2022, gathering feedback from crews to ensure it met their needs. The vehicles were then fully converted for service.

Andy Watson, EMAS Fleet Assistant General Manager, said: “We are always looking to improve the quality of our vehicles for our patients and our staff by constantly listening to valuable feedback. As part of this, we invited colleagues to review the three design prototype models, getting them to share their honest feedback before we proceeded with the conversion of the vehicles. Safety, comfort and practicality are our main priorities for both staff and patients alike.”

The Enyaq provides confident high-speed handling essential for rapid response, thanks to its near 50:50 weight distribution, low centre of gravity and 9.3m turning circle.

The electric motor's 310Nm of instant torque allows 0-62mph acceleration in 8.2 seconds, reaching a 99mph top speed - ample performance for safe navigation through difficult roads and traffic.

Škoda offers Enyaq conversions for UK emergency services, including Ambulance, Police and Fire Brigade, integrating communications platforms within the infotainment system and 360-degree lighting. Individual requirements can also be accommodated via Škoda's approved specialists.
