Nissan LEAF is first electric car to pass 400,000 sales milestone

The already best-selling electric vehicle of all time is set to be introduced to over a dozen new markets this year, as it passes 400,000 sales across the globe.

The 400,000 units sold milestone certainly indicates a global shift towards more sustainability. Having been on the market since 2010, the LEAF introduced exciting, long range electric driving to the masses in an affordable and accessible manor. Less than a decade ago, the electric car was a very niche idea, accessible only by luxury buyers.

With the second-generation LEAF came more power, more refinement and most importantly a longer range. Now with ranges in excess of 150 miles, more and more drivers are saying that their next car may be electric. The LEAF excels in its segment thanks to its powerful and agile performance and advanced technologies such as the new ProPILOT autonomous driving system.

“This milestone is a powerful statement that 400,000 customers, and counting, value the Nissan LEAF for the excitement, confidence and connection it delivers,” said Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci, Nissan’s global head of marketing, sales and electric vehicles. “The LEAF remains the icon of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, our strategy for moving more people to a better world.”

Since pledging themselves to being a global leader in producing and promoter zero emission vehicles, Nissan have been working with governments and utility companies to help the introduction of EV’s into the modern world. Several initiatives have been created to use LEAF batteries after their life in the car, when they are no longer entirely fit for service, such as portable street lights.

So far, the amount of Nissan LEAF’s sold since 2010 is enough to save 3.8 million barrels of oil a year. This means that customers are getting a beautifully refined, tremendously capable electric car and Mr. Polar bear is better off.

Nissan will be introducing the new Nissan LEAF to over 12 new markets around the globe in the next year.
