The Mazda2 Hybrid's pricing and specifications have been released. The Mazda2 Hybrid, which will be available to purchase in the UK in May, will be available in three trim grades: Pure, Agile, and Select, with pricing starting at £20,300.
The Mazda2 Hybrid is a self-charging, full hybrid that combines a 1,490cc 92ps three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59kW electric motor for a total system output of 116ps, bringing self-charging full hybrid powertrain technology to the Mazda model range for the first time. This Toyota Motor Europe OEM provided model, the latest result of Mazda Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation's long-standing relationship, will be added to the Mazda2 European line-up as Mazda's own brand car.
The Mazda2 Hybrid will be available alongside the Mazda2 in the United Kingdom, providing clients in the supermini segment the option of two separate vehicles, depending on their demands. The seven-model 2022 Mazda2 lineup is priced between £16,575 and £20,945 and is powered by the proven 1.5-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine.
The Mazda2 Hybrid is priced from £20,300 in the Pure grade, with all variants powered by the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine and hybrid technology. The Agile grade adds 15-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, an 8-inch colour touch-screen centre display, and smart keyless entry for £21,150. The £980 Comfort Pack adds design elements such as gloss black bumper mouldings and a gloss black front grille with a lower satin chrome surround. It also gets LED headlights and front fog lights, and the Comfort Pack adds sports-style front seats with black fabric and fake leather trim, as well as dual-zone climate control.
The Mazda2 Hybrid Select, which sits at the top of the three-model range, comes with a slew of extras, including privacy glass, 16-inch alloy wheels, power-fold mirrors, Qi Wireless smartphone charging, and Blind Spot Monitoring with Parking Support Function, to name a few. The Mazda2 Hybrid is available in seven different colours across all model grades.
Mazda's new hybrid will accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 9.7 seconds and provide a WLTP combined cycle fuel efficiency of 70.6 to 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 93-87g/km depending on the specification of 16" or 15" wheels.
The Mazda2 Hybrid enters EV mode at startup, providing smooth, seamless, and quiet operation on electric motor power in urban situations, with zero CO2, NOx, or particle emissions. During typical driving, power is allocated between the petrol engine and the electric motor to achieve the best potential performance and fuel efficiency. Kinetic energy is recovered as electrical energy during deceleration and braking and stored in the high-performance battery.
The battery power level is constantly controlled by an engine-driven generator, eliminating the requirement for the system to be recharged from an external source. Despite being a compact B-segment car, the new Mazda2 Hybrid's long 2,560 mm wheelbase provides comfortable seating for up to four passengers and 286 litres of boot capacity.
The Mazda2 Hybrid is a key vehicle for Mazda in terms of the company's commitment to meeting the goals outlined in 'Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030,' its long-term strategy for technical growth. In particular, in accordance with the Paris Agreement, it aims to cut company average well-to-wheel CO2 emissions by half by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050 by increasing fleet electrification.
Mazda dealers in the UK will gain from selling two unique B-segment models alongside the 2022 Mazda2, providing buyers in the supermini sector the choice of two cars, depending on their demands.
Mazda 2 2022
The 2022 Mazda2 is the latest upgrade to Mazda's famous supermini, with new trim levels and greater efficiency across the board for the 2022 model year. The Mazda2 line is still powered solely by the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, and the 115ps variant has been resurrected for the 2022 model year, with the 75ps and 90ps outputs.
The seven-model 2022 Mazda2 lineup begins with the £16,575 75ps SE-L and ends with the new £20,945 115ps GT Sport Tech model. The 90ps engine is available in SE-L and Sport trims, with manual and automatic transmission options for Sport models. The popular 90ps engine is also available in GT Sport trim, and for the first time in the 2022 model year, this trim is available with a choice of transmission. With the exception of the entry-level 75ps SE-L, all manual versions of the 2022 Mazda2 utilise Mazda's M Hybrid mild-hybrid powertrain and now sport the e-Skyactiv G badge.
The 1.5-litre petrol engine has been upgraded across all models to provide significant efficiency gains. The compression ratio has been increased from 13:1 to 15:1, and the exhaust manifold has been modified from a 4-1 to a 4-2-1 configuration. As a result, depending on production and transmission, CO2 emissions have decreased by 11 to 14g/km. The popular 90ps Sport manual, for example, has decreased from 120g/km to 107g/km, while equivalent improvements in economy across the range further reinforce the Mazda2's exceptional cost of ownership credentials.
The 2022 Mazda2 features great standard specs across the board, as has always been the case with the Mazda2. All models in the lineup include GPS, cruise control, integrated Bluetooth, and climate-controlled air conditioning, and the 2022 Mazda2 adds wireless Apple CarPlay from Sport level on up. The 2022 Mazda2 GT Sport model level and above receives a colour head-up display, reversing camera, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The new top-of-the-line 115ps GT Sport Tech comes included with Adaptive LED Headlights, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Smart City Brake Support, and a 360-degree camera, which are not typically found in this segment.
The 2022 Mazda2 is available in a total of 12 colours across the range, including Platinum Quartz Metallic, which fits the 2022 Mazda2's unchanged Kodo design and dynamic proportions.
Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director Mazda UK, commented on the Mazda2 Hybrid's arrival, saying, "the Mazda2 Hybrid is the latest example of Mazda's global collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation, and having available to our UK customers means we have the perfect car for customers looking for a small self-charging hybrid." It joins our battery-electric Mazda MX-30 and the mild-hybrid Mazda M Hybrid 2022 Mazda3, 2022 Mazda CX-30, and 2022 Mazda2* in our ever-expanding lineup."
"It's also fantastic that the Mazda2 Hybrid will be marketed alongside the 2022 Mazda2, as this means our customers will have the widest choice of small cars in UK showrooms," he continues. It may be our smallest vehicle, but it is built on the same principles of style, driver participation, and craftsmanship that distinguish all of our vehicles. We have a pair of distinct and premium challengers in what is still one of the most competitive niches in the UK auto market because it is sold alongside the Mazda2 Hybrid."
