A Unique Approach to Plug-In Hybrid Technology

The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is not your typical plug-in hybrid. It offers a new way of using a car as a battery electric vehicle, combining the benefits of an electric motor with Mazda's unique rotary engine technology. With a 17.8kWh battery and a 53-mile pure electric range, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV provides a seamless EV driving experience. The all-new 830cc single-rotor petrol engine acts as a generator, enabling longer distance drives without range or charging anxiety.

"The Mazda MX-30 R-EV combines fun handling with a well-controlled ride, while its classy and distinctive interior features one of the most user-friendly infotainment systems around." - Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor

The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV offers three drive modes: Normal, EV, and Charge. In Normal mode, the car drives on electric power as long as there is enough battery charge. When more power is needed, such as during acceleration, the rotary engine generator kicks in to provide additional power. EV mode allows drivers to stay in electric drive for as long as possible, while Charge mode safeguards a certain level of battery charge and can be used to reserve battery power for urban environments.

Half a Century of Rotary Expertise

Mazda's expertise in rotary engines spans over half a century. The decision to use the rotary powerplant in the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV was driven by its ability to produce the required output from a small, light, and easily packaged unit. The compact size of the 830cc single rotor engine allows for its placement alongside the generator and high-output motor in the engine bay. This arrangement, combined with the 17.8kWh battery and 50-litre fuel tank, creates a unique series plug-in hybrid with a flexible total range of over 400 miles.

"The MX-30 R-EV has come out on top in the plug-in hybrid market, and it's fantastic that it has been recognized for its unique technological approach." - Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director.

The use of the rotary engine as a generator rather than a drive unit is a testament to Mazda's dedication to adapting its technology to meet the needs of the times. The new 8C rotary engine is lighter than its predecessor, thanks to the use of aluminium. It features direct fuel injection for improved emissions and fuel economy, as well as an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system to enhance efficiency at low rpm and low load running. With a 50-litre fuel tank, the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV allows for long-distance travel without frequent refuelling.
