MG HS PHEV Named Best Plug-in Hybrid in Major 59-Car Test

The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid has added another major accolade to its growing list of achievements after being crowned the best plug-in hybrid currently on sale by Auto Express magazine.

In an extensive 59-car megatest evaluating the UK’s leading plug-in hybrid models, the MG HS PHEV secured first place, with Auto Express concluding that it is “the best plug-in hybrid you can buy right now.”

The latest recognition further strengthens the MG HS PHEV’s award-winning reputation, following back-to-back victories as What Car? magazine’s Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in both 2025 and 2026.

Independent Recognition from Leading UK Motoring Titles

Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director at MG Motor UK, described the achievement as significant independent validation for the model.

“Being named the best plug-in hybrid by two of the UK’s most respected car magazines is seriously credible recognition for the MG HS PHEV,” he said.

“Coming top of 59 plug-in hybrid models available in the UK and retaining the What Car? Plug-in Hybrid of the Year title for two consecutive years is an achievement everyone at MG is incredibly proud of. It also reflects MG’s commitment to delivering advanced technology and outstanding value.”

Long Electric Range and Everyday Practicality

Designed to combine the benefits of petrol and electric power, the MG HS PHEV delivers an efficient and refined driving experience suited to both everyday commuting and longer-distance travel.

Equipped with a 24.7kWh battery, the SUV offers up to 75 miles of pure electric driving range, helping to reduce emissions and lower running costs for daily users.

Inside, the MG HS PHEV features a spacious and premium-focused cabin with twin 12.3-inch digital displays providing an intuitive connected experience. Heated front seats are fitted as standard, while optional tan leather-style upholstery adds an additional touch of luxury.

The model blends strong performance, practicality and comfort, making it a compelling choice for both private and business users.

Auto Express Megatest Victory

Published on 14 May 2026, Auto Express’s landmark PHEV megatest evaluated 16 major plug-in hybrid powertrains representing 59 vehicles available on the UK market.

Over three days of real-world testing, the publication assessed factors including electric-only range, hybrid fuel economy, refinement, driving dynamics and day-to-day usability.

The MG HS PHEV impressed judges by delivering a real-world electric range of 68 miles — the highest figure recorded during the test — despite several rivals featuring larger battery packs.

Priced from £32,495 on the road, the MG also proved significantly more affordable than every other vehicle in the top five rankings. Auto Express additionally noted that monthly lease costs for the MG HS PHEV could be as much as £200 lower than the second-placed competitor.

The publication praised the MG’s 295bhp powertrain, efficient hybrid system, relaxed driving character and straightforward digital interface, stating that its overall package rivals established premium German alternatives.

The MG HS PHEV also ranked among the most tax-efficient models in the test, placing within the 7% Benefit-in-Kind tax band — a key advantage for company car drivers.

Consecutive What Car? Awards

The Auto Express success follows consecutive victories at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards, where the MG HS PHEV was named Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in both 2025 and 2026.

What Car? highlighted the SUV’s exceptional value proposition, praising its combination of strong electric range, 295bhp performance output, spacious interior and high equipment levels.

The publication also recognised the MG HS PHEV as an appealing option for both private customers and fleet operators seeking a practical and affordable electrified SUV.
