Kia's electric battery technology centres around their Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is a dedicated architecture designed specifically for electric vehicles. It was developed to optimize performance, efficiency, and interior space by using a flat battery pack and rear-, front-, or all-wheel-drive layouts.
The E-GMP was engineered to maximize the unique advantages of EVs—such as low center of gravity, flexible cabin design, and fast charging—while providing a scalable base for different models and body styles.
Kia’s E-GMP platform is the world’s first system that lets electric vehicles charge seamlessly at both 400V and 800V—with no need for extra adapters or manual settings. The standard 800V ultra-fast charging can take the EV6 from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. Even when using a more common 400V charger, the system automatically boosts the voltage to 800V using the car’s motor and inverter, so you still get fast, efficient charging without any hassle.
Kia’s innovative heat pump system doesn’t just rely on outside air to warm the cabin—it also captures waste heat from key EV components like the motor, onboard charger, power electronics module, battery, and slow charger. By recycling this otherwise lost energy, the system delivers exceptional efficiency, helping maintain comfort without draining the battery.
Kia’s E-GMP platform is designed to be compact and lightweight, which not only reduces overall weight but also creates more interior space for passengers. It’s packed with smart engineering, including advanced hairpin winding in the motor and high-efficiency silicon carbide semiconductors in the inverter. These innovations boost overall system efficiency, helping Kia EVs go farther on a single charge—so you get more range without compromise.
The EV6 is the first Kia to feature the advanced e-All-Wheel Drive system, which seamlessly switches between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive to optimise both efficiency and traction, no matter the road conditions. With powerful motors on both the front and rear axles, placed low in the chassis, the drivetrain delivers thrilling performance while enhancing weight distribution and lowering the centre of gravity. The result? A drive that feels more stable at high speeds and more confident through corners.
e-AWD is now available across multiple Kia vehicles including the EV6, EV9 and Sorento Plug-in Hybrid.
